The series Excerpt evolved out of my life-long fascination with, and love for the pages of Medieval illuminated manuscripts. I have never been able to read the Latin, written in Gothic Blackletter. Rather, it is the typographic “color” and texture that I find so seductive. Throughout this series I translate those qualities into paintings of my own indecipherable texts, often achieved through the repetition of a single meaningful symbol that evokes personal memories. Many of the gridded paintings in the series incorporate, or solely reference, the tradition of illustrating stories in the marginalia.
